ScholarsEdge Guide: Papers

Edited

Overview

The Papers section in ScholarsEdge helps you explore academic research produced by scholars across—and beyond—the IHS network. Whether you're searching for relevant work in your field, discovering new authors, or keeping up with recently published research from IHS-engaged scholars, this feature is designed to support deeper learning and stronger professional connections.

You can access Papers anytime by selecting Papers in the left-hand sidebar. Inside, you'll find three tabs:

  • Explore – Search publications by topic, concept, or author.

  • Recently Published – View the latest work from scholars who have engaged with IHS.

  • Content Multiplier – (Coming soon)

This guide walks you through how to use these tools effectively.

Explore Tab

What the Explore Tab Does

The Explore tab is your main tool for researching topics and discovering scholars connected to your interests. Here you can:

  • Search for topics, concepts, or specific authors

  • Browse lists of relevant papers

  • Discover network scholars publishing in your field

  • Read AI-powered author summaries

  • Explore similar papers based on any result

This tab is ideal for literature reviews, project proposals, early-stage idea development, and cross-disciplinary exploration.

Running a Search

Simply enter any topic, concept, question, or author's name into the search bar. If you don’t know where to start, several example searches are listed under the input field to help spark ideas.

Searches can be broad (e.g., “public choice theory”) or very specific (“tradeoffs in occupational licensing reform”). ScholarsEdge will return the closest matches available.

Understanding Your Search Results

Each paper card includes:

  • Title – Click to visit the journal’s page (often behind a paywall).

  • Publication – Journal or hosted platform.

  • Date of Publication

  • Abstract – A short overview of the work.

  • Author(s) – Underlined names link to IHS scholar profiles.

  • Explore Similar – Shows papers conceptually related to that specific article.

Because many journals control access to their publications, certain papers may require a subscription or purchase. IHS is exploring ways to integrate full-text access for thousands of papers in the future.

Relevant Authors Section

Above your list of search results, ScholarsEdge displays a set of relevant authors. These scholars publish frequently in fields related to your search and may be valuable connections for your work.

For IHS network authors, you can:

  • View Profile – See their publication history, biography, and any IHS programs you share with them.

  • Summarize – Generate an AI-powered summary of their research contributions and understand why they appear in your results.

These summaries help you quickly evaluate whether an author’s work aligns with your interests.

Exploring Similar Papers

Every paper result includes an Explore Similar button. Clicking this reveals a new set of results related to the selected work, based on:

  • Conceptual similarity

  • Shared research themes

  • Methodological overlap

  • Related disciplines

This tool is particularly useful for discovering hidden connections across fields or for expanding a literature review.

Understanding Author Name Formatting

Author names appear in two styles:

  • Underlined → The author is part of the IHS network and has a viewable profile.

  • Not underlined → The author is outside the network and coauthored with IHS network scholars.

Using Papers to Build Academic Connections

The Papers feature is designed not only to help you discover relevant content but also to help you connect with scholars behind the work.

For example:
If you and another scholar both attended an IHS program, and you discover that they recently published on a topic you’re researching, you can reach out through your preferred professional channels to start a conversation or explore potential collaboration.

Author Profiles

What You’ll Find in a Profile

Clicking on any underlined author name takes you to their ScholarsEdge profile, where you can view:

  • A biography (when available)

  • A list of their publications

  • IHS program engagement they share with you

  • Relevant academic and professional information

We’re also working on adding a profile-level search bar for scholars with extensive publication histories, allowing you to filter for specific topics within their work.

Recently Published Tab

What This Tab Shows

The Recently Published tab highlights newly published research from scholars who have engaged with IHS. This can include:

  • Program alumni

  • Funding recipients

  • Workshop participants

  • Mentors, presenters, or affiliated faculty

This section is updated regularly to showcase the latest contributions from across the network.

Filtering Recently Published Results

You can filter results by:

  • Discipline – e.g., Economics, Philosophy, Sociology

  • Journal Title – Narrow results to papers from specific publications

These filters help you target the most relevant new work in your field.
